Navigation menu iTunes-like

Has anyone developed a navigation interface that looks like the one on iTunes or Mail? Menu items on the left that open and close, revealing or hiding sub-menu items? Items contain graphics and text

I tried with a global image container, pics of the different menus, and a lot of buttons on top. It works fine but I can't make my selection remain highlighted.

Any ideas with a portal?
