MetroGirl Posted February 20, 2001 Posted February 20, 2001 If I'm updating my database on a Mac, then email it to a PC and try to open it, I get an error message and it won't open. Is there a way I can Use both a Mac and PC to make updates? Is the file not compatible between the two? Thanks, Debbie
PinnWal Posted February 20, 2001 Posted February 20, 2001 Make sure you name the file with a .FP5 (or .FP3 with older version)extention on the Mac. While Mac's don't need the extention, a PC won't recognize the file type without the proper extention. Later :-)
MetroGirl Posted February 20, 2001 Author Posted February 20, 2001 Hey - thanks for the response. I'm not exactly sure what you mean about naming the file extension. I know how to do that on a pc, but I'm new on the mac. What steps would I have to go through to do this on a mac? Thanks again - Debbie
MetroGirl Posted February 20, 2001 Author Posted February 20, 2001 I'm going to rename the file with the extension - thanks. the error message I get is: '"file" was not created by filemaker or is severly damaged and cannot be opened.'
Vaughan Posted February 20, 2001 Posted February 20, 2001 Try zip compressing the file before you attach it to the email. It sounds like an encode/decode incompatibility between mail programs, or one of the ISPs is munging it. Put the file on a Zip disk and post it?

Vaughn is right on here. The file structure is getting crunched in the translation from mac media to pc media. Compressing the file into a Stuffit archive should eliminate this problem during transfer and it should extract and open normally. ------------------ =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Kurt Knippel Consultant Database Resources mailto:[email protected] http://www.database-resources.com =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
PinnWal Posted February 21, 2001 Posted February 21, 2001 Nothing fancy... When naming your file on a Mac, simply name it "File.FP5" As long as your filename has the .FP5 extention, it will open on both PC & Mac. Later :-)
MadHatter Posted February 21, 2001 Posted February 21, 2001 get stuffit for the pc. here http://www.aladdinsys.com
