If I'm updating my database on a Mac, then email it to a PC and try to open it, I get an error message and it won't open. Is there a way I can Use both a Mac and PC to make updates? Is the file not compatible between the two?

Thanks,

Debbie

Make sure you name the file with a .FP5 (or .FP3 with older version)extention on the Mac. While Mac's don't need the extention, a PC won't recognize the file type without the proper extention.

Hey - thanks for the response. I'm not exactly sure what you mean about naming the file extension. I know how to do that on a pc, but I'm new on the mac. What steps would I have to go through to do this on a mac? Thanks again -

Debbie

I'm going to rename the file with the extension - thanks.

the error message I get is:

'"file" was not created by filemaker or is severly damaged and cannot be opened.'

Try zip compressing the file before you attach it to the email.

It sounds like an encode/decode incompatibility between mail programs, or one of the ISPs is munging it.

Put the file on a Zip disk and post it?

Vaughn is right on here. The file structure is getting crunched in the translation from mac media to pc media.

Compressing the file into a Stuffit archive should eliminate this problem during transfer and it should extract and open normally.

Nothing fancy... When naming your file on a Mac, simply name it "File.FP5" As long as your filename has the .FP5 extention, it will open on both PC & Mac.

whats the error message?
