Custom GUI Question: Can I do this with Filemaker??

Hello everybody!

I am a newbie to Filemaker. I am evaluating various options to custom build an electronic medical records solution for a Maternity Hospital.

Our workflow at the hospital is very unique and we cannot retro-fit available EMR solutions into our setup. We are looking forward to develop our own solution which will basically do the following:

My question is: Can we do it with filemaker? or do we have to rely on VB/C++/etc on Access/MS SQL and stuff?

1. Show a SIMPLE screen which can be nagivated by keyboard direction keys alone, with simple fields such as:

Name:

Wife of:

Dt of Birth:

Gravida:

Para:

Aborts:

Live:

2. I do not want any other distractions like Menus, etc. Just one screen for the Admission desk. With two buttons are the end: Save record/ Cancel.

I also do not want to show 'browse' 'layout' 'record' and the book like icon which show up on the left when I open filemaker.

3. We just want a very simple DOS like Screen. Our Nurses have never worked with computers before.

We do not want any fancy GUI to distract, confuse or frighten them. Just one plain blue sheet with white spaces, like plain paper forms. scrollable up and down.

4. The nurses will type in the relavent information and accordingly, the system should respond with more questions. For example, the first line on the form is title, followed by name.

If the nurse selects: 'MRS', the system will change the line 2 question to: 'Wife of'..

if the nurse selects Miss, the system will change the line 2 question to 'daughter of' or 'care of'.

My question once again is: can we create customised interfaces with rules? maybe we will have some tabs on the top, but no menus. The interface will have to work just with keyboard keys, navigation by number pad and direction keys.

Please let me know! I would be most grateful!

1. Yes, you have the option to use the Tab, Return, or Enter key to go from one field or object to the next.

2. The status area (where the book icon is) can be hidden with a simple script step. You can use Custom Menus to hide almost all menus, or you can set up the file to run in kiosk mode to hide the menu bar completely.

3. The design of the screen is completely up to you.

4. This can be done with relational value lists, auto-entered data, standard FileMaker techniques.

It sounds like it's a Yes to all of the above. You can set buttons and tab objects to be keyboard-accessible too.

Thank you, Fitch!

I am reading up about the kiosk mode in filemaker and about creating runtimes in kiosk mode.
