Newbies Dan Singler Posted September 30, 2008 Newbies Posted September 30, 2008 I would like to preface that I am fairly new to File Maker so excuss me if I do not get the terminaology corret. Also thank you in advance for your help! I am looking to be able to copy and paste information pulled into the data base so that I can preform a "find" I have noticed that I can only copy and paste for editable fields, however. The first field is a calculation field that has category, make and model so even though it is editable in browse mode, if the user tries modifying the field it prompts that the field is not modifiable. So I am content with them being able to copy and paste information out of that field. The problem I am having is that the serial number field if it is un-editable in browse mode, then the user is unable to copy the text and paste it anywhere. I do not want to run the risk of the user changing/deleting the data by mistake, and therefore do not want to check the edit in browse mode box. Is there a way I can allow the user to copy and paste data stored in the fields without risking them deleting information? Again thanks!

There's no such risk - users cannot modify the contents of a calculation field (this is assuming you are using a "real" calculation field, not auto-entered calculation).

Carrying on with what Comment has said create a calculated field 'c_Serial#.' Set the calcualtion to 'YourSerialField.' Replace the yourserialfield on your layout with c_Serial# field. You can now copy your serial number without worrying about the user deleting or changing it.
comment Posted September 30, 2008 Posted September 30, 2008 That's not really necessary - even with auto-entered data such as a serial number, you can simply check the "Prohibit modification of value…" option in the field's definition.
