Hello all, whats the best way to have a smooth transition between different versions of solutions?

I am closed to finished with one of my solutions, it should become a stand alone application with export and import function. I would expect a simple transition function for users, one file for simple import and export. My solution has lots of tables and portals connecting the whole thing. The optimum would be like on OSX a separate data file from the application so no matter what future updates will happen all the data stays compatible to the solution.

What are the best solutions there or is something like on OSX possible with FM?
