Is there any way to import just one record from one filemaker file (that contains multiple records) into another filemaker file? in the import records menu i don't see any option to not import every record from the other filemaker file.

Or is there any way to import all records except duplicates? is there any way to get filemaker to skip any records that have the same data in, say, the first and last name fields, but only import the records that are unique in these fields?

If anyone knew the answer to either question, my life would become much easier. Thanks.

If the source file is open, only the found set will be imported.

Yes, by requiring unique value in the target field validation options.
