FMP 5.5 Dialing ISP on Launch

Featured Replies

Whenever I launch FMP 5.5 for Mac (OS 9.1), as the splash screen comes up, I start to dial out to my ISP. I have disabled the plug ins for auto updates, but this still happens.

Is there another setting I should be looking for?

TIA

You have configured FMP to use TCP/IP as the networking protool, and/or have enabled Web Companion.

Network Protocol is set to "None" (did that right after installation), and Web Companion and all other plug ins have been disabled. Very odd, eh?

Thanks, though. They were good suggestions.

Also, I have changed the preferences from TCP/IP to AppleTalk, and I'm still dialing out on every launch. The Web Companion and the Auto Update plug ins have been disabled (Check marks gone from boxes next to plug in names in Preferences). This has happened 100% of the time since upgrading from FMP 4.03.

I received the following from FileMaker today ...

quote:

This is an issue we have been seeing lately, and I am involved in getting it properly documented. What we have at present is this:

Issue: When launching FileMaker Pro 5.5 on a Mac, the modem automatically attempts to connect to the internet. FileMaker Pro 5.0 did not cause this behavior.

Also, when opening a file set to multi-user, or when choosing "open remote" from the File menu or when clicking the "Hosts" button in the Open File dialog, if the selected protocol in preferences is TCP/IP, the modem will automatically attempt to connect to the internet.

Explanation: Web Companion and RDAC seem to be causing the system to automatically dial the modem upon the launch of the application. Testing is ongoing. Development is aware of this issue.

Workarounds:

1. Drag the Web Companion and the RDAC out of the Extensions subfolder of the FileMaker folder.

This will prevent the system from calling automatically the modem when launching FileMaker Pro 5.5, but will preclude serving data over the web or making remote ODBC queries.

2. Change the network protocol in the FileMaker preferences dialog to AppleTalk.

This will prevent the system from automatically calling the modem when opening a file set to multi-user, or when choosing "open remote" from the File menu or when clicking the "Hosts" button in the Open File dialog, but will also preclude cross-platform file-sharing with Filemaker Pro.

3. For OSX, go to the System Preferences, select "Internal Modem" from the "Configure Menu", then choose the "PPP" tab. Click the "PPP Options" button. Uncheck the first option, "Connect automatically when starting TCP/IP applications".

For Mac Classic OS, open the Remote Access Control Panel, click the "Options" button. Choose the "Protocol" tab. Uncheck the first option, "Connect automatically when starting TCP/IP applications".

This will prevent the system from automatically calling the modem when working with FileMaker Pro or any other application.

As you can see, each of these workarounds has its own advantages and drawbacks, depending on what you're trying to do and when you're seeing this behavior.

It sounds like a bug fix is in the works.
