I am not sure if I should be upset with Filemaker, Microsoft or both. I depend heavily on Filemaker for a number of solutions used in my company and others I have written for associates. Because Macs are very rare in Kenya and Tanzania, I have been using PCs for most of my work and have a number of solutions in 4.1 and 5.0. Because 5.0 won't allow editing a 4.1 file and leave it available to 4.1 users (and not all of my associates want to spend the money for 5.0) I have to run both on my computers.

Now I made the mistake of getting Windows XP which has helped solve some of my other Windows issues on general stability, but neither 5.0 nor 4.1 are supported by Microsoft and Filemaker's answer (as it is to everything) is buy 5.5! After spending thousands of dollars to upgrade to 5.0, I cannot upgrade to 5.5.

I am now having problems with printing, saving files (as) and other funtions. Does anyone have similar problems using less than 5.5 on XP and if so, do you have solutions to offer.

I appreciate your help.

Which version of XP are you using, the "Home" version or the Professional one? XP Home has a number of limitations.

BTW, you might want to download the security patch from Microsoft. They claim it plugs a very serious security rbeach.

FWIW, NO version of FileMaker Pro is certified to run on Windows XP, although FileMAker Pro 5.5 appears to do so without issue. You can't certify an application to run on an OS that was not released when the application was released.

I am using XP Home as I don't use these computers for networking other than a simple network at home. I do a lot of my FM Pro work at home in my spare time.

And each version of Windows is supposed to be an improvement on the prior fixing all of their bugs. It seems that, instead, it is a new bundle of bugs. And thanks, I have downloaded the upgrade that plugs yet another problem.

I have Windoze XP home and use FMP 4.0 and 5.0 without issue. Of course FMP will tell you that spending money will sove any issue you have.

Is your problem realted to trying to operate the batabase over a network? Strange how programs designed to work over a network have to jump through all sorts of hoops and adjustments just to get them to work, while any decent hacker can crack in and take over the entire computer running the new XP!

The XP was a little more stable than the rediculous ME version.

The "certified" piece is just a rubber stamp to fool the brainwashed IT types that bow down to Billy Gates.

Reguardless, you should still be upset with Microsoft... just because.

FMI is closed until after the New year's Holiday. I will make some inquiries as to 4.1 and 5.0 on XP and see what I can find out for you though.

It may simply be---although I am not stating this definitely---that FMP 4.1 and 5.0 do not run on Windows XP, any more thatn FM Server 5 will run on Windows 98 or Mac OS 8.1

I am using 5.0 with xp Home, the same as Gary, to work on files at home with no network and have had no problems. I have accessed our server using dial up and had no real problems except as usual, the slow speed with dial up.
