Can guideline text be shown on fields?

The idea is simple - I have a portal which has three rows of fields on each portal row. Thus, I cannot add header labels to indicate what each field does, unless I add three rows of labels on top of the portal (ugly!).

Thus, my question: can greyed text be shown on each field, with a description of what the user is expected to enter? Eg. you could see:

[color:#AAAAAA]Type your username here

Which is cleared when the user enters the field. This is used in may applications and websites, so it's not an uncommon UI feature.

I've not found a way to do this yet.

Regards,

Mike
