Value list changing dynamically - not a desired behavior

Featured Replies

I have a text field which I populated using a script and then used as the basis for a Value List.

What's weird is that, when I pull up the value list in a pop-up menu, the list will dynamically change — as if FM were treating the text field as a calculation field, and recalculating the value of the text field by re-applying the script.

I can explain in more detail, but I'm not sure it's necessary to do so. I gather that this is one of the new features of FM 10 (or 8 or 9) — I only recently upgraded from FM 7. I'm writing in hope that someone can explain the underlying principles of this dynamic.

I'm accustomed to FM forbidding me from using calculation fields as the basis for value lists. In the present case, FM appears to be recalculating just the item in the value list which is the current selection. And the change in the item is due to the shift of perspective: the original value was calculated from within one table; the value list is employed in a different, related table.

I've figured out how to fix the problem. But, again, I'd like a clearer sense of what FM is doing and how to control (even turn off) this feature.

Aaaaaand then I realized that I'd set a script trigger to activate on any change to the pull-down field, running the script. So all's well in FM land and I now understand that I'm the man behind the curtain and the wicked witch rolled into one.

I'm accustomed to FM forbidding me from using calculation fields as the basis for value lists.

Only unstored ones.
