Hi Guys,

I have a client who is using FileMaker Server 8 with Pro 8 client quite successfully for the last couple of years. They need to upgrade their server, which will come with OS 10.5, so I am going to recommend FileMaker Server 10 as this is confirmed to work on that OS. I don't particularly want/need them to upgrade to FMPro 10, What is the potential of FileMaker Server 10 serving about 60 files for FMP 8 clients.

Any help would be much appreciated on this.

FMS10 can serve to FileMaker Pro 8 clients with no problem. Just note you won't have usage of any newer server-side features included with 9 or 10.

You might take a look at the thefmkb.com/7107 Tech Info for some limitations regarding changing passwords on hosted files in mixed environments with FileMaker Server 10.

But I would also talk to your Sales Rep at FileMaker, Inc. You should really be upgrading to the latest version of the FMP client. In acquiring FileMaker® Server 10, there may be special deal bundles for volume licenses of FileMaker® Pro 10.

Said issue is not applicable in this case. The technote referenced states:

"This issue occurs if the file is hosted with FileMaker Pro 9 or FileMaker Server 9 or earlier, and you are accessing the file in FileMaker Pro 10."

There is no issue with changing passwords when accessing a file hosted on FMS10 using FileMaker Pro 8.

Thanks, John, for correcting the URL link. There have however been reports of the same password change issue with earlier versions. I wanted the OP to be aware of that possibility.

Thank you guys, really appreciate this. Will ask FMI Inc if they offer any discounts for vla solution. Client is really happy with current version of FM and their database hence I dont really wish to upgrade the, especially with the new status bar in v10.

Password issue should not really affect me as I would be hosting with FMS10 and accessing with FMP8 as John mentioned (Sorry Steven couldn't find any references to password problems with hosting with FMS10 and using earlier versions).

As luck would have it, they are not running specials on Pro and Server bundles. Check the FMI web site.
