LaRetta Posted June 30, 2009 Posted June 30, 2009 (edited) Well, in Browse mode a User can omit a field if they wish (vs. 10 table view). I thought (silly me) ... how wonderful because I could use the same layout and add or remove fields (via script) for Save As Excel!! Sometimes Users want a field and sometimes they don't. Firstly, are we not given the ability (in Browse mode AS DEVELOPERS in a script) to show or not show fields? That would be cool because I wouldn't have to create several layouts (each with different fields on it) just for Save As Excel. Secondly, dang if FileMaker doesn't mess up the data when a field has been 'removed'. Create two fields (Field1 a number and Field2 text) and place them both on table [color:green]layout. Make sure both fields contain data. Select 'Modify' and omit Field1 from the table view. Now Save As Excel ... Both LABELS appear in the Excel document. The data in number doesn't appear. But worse ... the data in the Field2 moves to the column of Field1 (under the number label). Good grief. There goes wonderful possibilities of functionality out the window and here comes another gotcha which will make it DANGEROUS to use. I just want everyone to be aware of it. Please FileMaker, THINK THROUGH things you do for us. Anyone playing with this 'functionality' could have figured out in 10 minutes that it was (greatly lacking) in ability and that it breaks. LaRetta Posted June 30, 2009 Author Posted June 30, 2009 I just had a vision of a financial spreadsheet (all numbers) and a User omitting one field and ... all numbers shifting one left in Excel. That sends shivers through me - no using table view with vs. 10 ever (or omit the Status Toolbar). Great options.
ejpvi Posted July 14, 2009 Posted July 14, 2009 does this occur when a field is omitted by 'modify' in table view in fmp10 ?
LaRetta Posted July 14, 2009 Author Posted July 14, 2009 in Browse mode a User can omit a field if they wish (vs. 10 table view). Yep!
ejpvi Posted July 14, 2009 Posted July 14, 2009 Thanks for pointing out this bug.... and what a bug... I am terrified my users will do this. Some are getting braver.... I wonder what would happen if I removed all of the labels from browse view? Unfortunately I have many users that insist on using table view... can't get them away from it.
LaRetta Posted July 14, 2009 Author Posted July 14, 2009 It is now fixed in the 10.0v3 Updater - I tested it. YAY! :laugh2:
