jordan gibson Posted July 8, 2009 Posted July 8, 2009 Hi I have been trying to learn filemaker pro 10 in my spare time for a couple of week. I have created so far one solution that was based around one table. I would like to try and learn about relationships. What I would like to build is a solution to help me learn so my spec is as follows a BOOK has many PAGES and a page has many states (not_read,read,errors, etc) So in the end I should be able to pick a book from a list and see the status of each page and its history. I havent got very farbut if someone could tell me if im going in the right direction that would be great. What confuses me is how to get data into the tables when joined. If you create a new record on a joined table does it travel across the joins? books_again.zip
jamesducker Posted July 8, 2009 Posted July 8, 2009 Try the attached, all I have done is add some data and put a portal on the books page. I don't understand why a "page" would have a "history" but maybe I am missing the point of the database. Nevertheless your relationships seem fine to me. Hope that helps. James books_again.fp7.zip
efen Posted July 9, 2009 Posted July 9, 2009 I have approached this in a slightly different way - see attached. You select the book and create a new page for it. From the page layout you can then change the page status. I have added a few extra fields - mainly creation dates and times - so that there can be some logical order for showing the pages in the portal - and some extra relationships. books_again1.zip
jamesducker Posted July 9, 2009 Posted July 9, 2009 So I see. Seems to work nicely. What's it for? James
efen Posted July 9, 2009 Posted July 9, 2009 If the question is addressed to me I have no idea -- I'm not the OP who wants this functionality - "pick a book from a list and see the status of each page and its history".
