FM9 Certification Question

Featured Replies

Howdy Y'all!

I just got FM10 Certified last week, and here is my question:

Does it make sense to get FM9 certified too?

- I mean, it is not that old and probably will stick around for a while.

If yes, do I need to study again for FM9?

- When preparing for FM10 exam, I read every chapter of FTS, reviewed the manuals and some KB articles.

How difficult FM9 exam is compared to FM10?

- I just know FM9 has 72 questions vs. 62 on FM10 exam.

I've worked w/FMP for 2 years. FM10 is my first FileMaker Certification.

Any advice is appreciated!

It depends who your customers are, but I imagine most potential clients who care about certification would be sufficiently impressed by FM10 cert; FM9 might add something, but it would be diminishing returns.

You wouldn't need to study everything again -- I'd concentrate on features that were introduced in 9.

I felt like the 10 test was harder, but of course YMMV.

Nobody has ever once said to me, "Gee, it's good you're 10 certified, but I'm especially reassured that you're certified in 7. That's honestly why we hired you over the other guy."

Of course having more than one cert can give an implicit (and not always accurate) sense of how long you've been in the field professionally, but I think certification is only one of very many things prospects look at when they're evaluating you, including quality of work, references, reputation, price point, location, availability, access to additional resources, personal dynamic/charisma, ability to work in project teams, project management methods...and so on.

That said, it's only $150, and an easy touch up to your resume. If you passed 10 I don't think you'll have trouble with 9.

Tom, I thought the 10 test was harder too - it's not your imagination.

Yes, no trouble w/FM9 exam.

It's not Oracle or Cisco exam - it is just FileMaker ???

I honestly cannot say 10 was harder than 9 or vice-versa. They both were different. 9 had more questions, but perhaps they were a little easier. But that's probably my opinion because I took 10 before 9. After all, these are FileMaker tests and compared to other real-world certifications, they are baby-tests.

Yeah, when got all uppity after passing my 10, my VP suggested (as a joke) that I polish my credentials a bit with a 27 part MCSE exam suite. No thank you.

And if you want further context, when I took the 9 exam, the woman alongside me was taking her hairdresser's exam. It was a 7 hour test, involving chemistry, because apparently it's useful to avoid spontaneous combustion in the salon.
