Mental Posted August 27, 2009 Posted August 27, 2009 I currently have FM9 (Upgrading to 10) on a windows server and am having some reliability issues. I am a mac person and am considering switching to an OSX server but if someone has experience on which OS supports FM Server better that would be extremely helpful! Also, I may even consider hosting this myself but heard that FM is a pretty network heavy application. We use IWP exclusively and average 15 connections around the clock. Our local cable provider has a business class connection but I'm not sure that would be fast enough as it is only 6mb upstream. Wow, I guess I have more questions than I realized. Any help would be appreciated! Randall
John May - Point In Space Posted August 27, 2009 Posted August 27, 2009 I would highly suggest hosting on OS X over Windows, as over the years we have seen a lot more Windows-only bugs in FileMaker Server Advanced. If you are interested in considering an external host, have a look at our services: http://www.pointinspace.com/ We have been providing FileMaker hosting for over 10 years, and use solely Apple OS X-based Xserves. Feel free to contact me off-list at jmay(at)pointinspace.com if you have any questions about our services. - John
Wim Decorte Posted August 28, 2009 Posted August 28, 2009 I am a mac person and am considering switching to an OSX server but if someone has experience on which OS supports FM Server better that would be extremely helpful! FM supports both equally well. In the end it pays to stick to the platform that YOU or whoever needs to maintain the system is most familiar with. Also, I may even consider hosting this myself but heard that FM is a pretty network heavy application. Sort of. But mainly the FMP to FMS part of it. Since you are using IWP exclusively and not FMP then that traffic is generated between the Web Publishing Engine and FMS and not between the IWP client and FMS. In your scenario you will have much better (faster) results if you host this yourself provided that your clients are internal.
