FileMaker guy feeling the need to learn new tricks

Featured Replies

In the past I have been a systems/network admin that was also a beginner/intermediate FileMaker developer out of necessity and hobby (primarily a hobby selling a FM db online). Couple of years ago I was hired to do FileMaker development full-time. So that turned my hobby into my occupation and well I don't want to go home and do more FM dev cause I'm already starting to feel the burn out.

At work I don't have much time to teach myself new things outside of the FMworld because of the fast pace of dev. All our development is straight FileMaker Client/Server stuff. But in a few weeks we should be slowing down enough that I'll get some breathing room and have a chance to learn something new. I want to keep it related to work but was wondering what others might be a good place to focus my energies. This is not only to improve my skills but to improve resume.

Doing more with FM and PHP or try SQL/PHP, Oracle, Servoy.

I know its impossible for me to get a definitive answer but I know many of you have tons of experience and are wise so I love to hear your opinions.

I'm going to only say this:

There is a growing trend right now where real world applications are starting to become browser based. I'm talking about general multi-user CRM and business management software. I don't need to explain the advantages of having software which could be accessed from any platform and any browser without any installs. With adaptation of HTML5 and other web technologies full suite applications can be made possible.

So I'll say, yeah, PHP/MySQL is a good start. Your experience with filemaker probably gives a foot up on database designs and concepts, so all that's left is programming. If you really do want to start doing something fun as a hobby I would suggest skipping PHP and jumping onboard Python. Check out the Django web framework for python, it parallels filemaker in some ways because it lets you create impressive results relatively easily because the framework and tools already exist for your own creative expression.
