Spaces in File/Directory names?

Featured Replies

I came across a show-stopper recently.

Server using NT 4.0 & FileMaker Server 5

Workstations using Win98 & Filemaker Pro 5

I have a directory of files, named "PIS 2002", that I placed in the FileMaker Server 5 directory. This setup is an exact duplicate of a currently running set of files, save for the file name changes of adding 2002. Name changes were done with FileMaker Developer 5, with no problems, and all scripts were updated without problem. The main file within the PIS 2002 directory is named "Main Menu2002.fp5", with permissions/sharing set to multi-user(not hidden).

Main Menu2002.fp5 could not be found by the server, and did not show up in the hosts list. The purpose of executing from the server was to allow multiple user access.

Since there was a time limit, I placed the "PIS 2002" directory directly on a workstation, and executed EVERYTHING without any problems, but as a single user access. Keypoint: no problems.

After many check and changes, the only thing I can deduce is that perhaps FileMaker Server 5 does not like numerals or spaces in the directory name (PIS 2002), or numerals in the file names (Main Menu2002).

Does anyone an idea why this may have occurred?

The easiest way to test this would be to name the file in a simpler way and see if the server and workstations can open it.

I would like to give that a try, however, my support of the app is completed with the success of running the year-end reports (in, unfortunately, single-user "mode"), and I no longer have access to test that theory out.

If anyone has encountered a like problem, and was able to determine that spaces were the cause, could they let me know?

Again, thanks for the assist. I just hate loose ends...
