Intermittent connection problems on FM6 guest with FM6 host

We have 2 separate/isolated networks running the same files (different data) and we are experiencing reproducible connection loss on both networks when exiting a field on the guest computer (FM6, Mac OS 10.4.11) with a file hosted by FM6 on Mac OS 10.5.6 on the main computer. Each network consists of one host and one guest only. There are a number of fields on the layout but the largest field containing the bulk of the data (the body of a letter) is related to the crashing of FM6 on the guest if the user accidentally moves out of or away from the field by tabbing/clicking or even moves to scroll the window or click into another field or button. This results in the record not being saved on the host.

Initial thoughts were cabling and so one of the networks has gone to wireless networking however the problem persists. The trigger for this behaviour seems to have been buying new iMacs with 10.5 installed.

Any help solving this problem is greatly appreciated.

This could be a OS level issue. FM6 was last issued with dual support on Mac OS 9 and the first release of OS X.

If the issue is confined to OS X 10.5 then that's the clue.

It really is time to upgrade your FM licenses.

Thanks IdealData,

I have also suggested the FM upgrade however they argue that if it is a hardware problem then the upgrade won't help and would be time consuming and costly to make the jump to the fp7 format. It does seem to me to be OS related but I'd hoped that someone here could confirm it before advising them how to proceed. They can alter their use of the system to avoid requiring sharing (eg dictate the letter and have it entered on the main computer (ie the "host") but if there is a known issue with a simple solution that would be desireable.

Cheers.

The upgrade may not be time consuming, albeit you will have to REPLACE all licenses as FM6 went off support years ago.

You could download the FM10 trial and try the conversion and see what you get.

It is unlikely to be a hardware problem, but to test why not create another boot partition on a new iMac and install OS X 10.4

Whatever happens will almost certainly involve upgrading to FM10 as new OS versions will almost certainly spell the end for older versions of FMP. Example - FM6 was last version to support OS 9.

As for Windows 7 - who knows!
