Angelo990 Posted March 27, 2002 Posted March 27, 2002 Hello All: I have a new box to host an existing filemaker database. Relocated (copied) the database itself to the filemaker server folder on the new box and restarted services. Both PC & Mac can see the server but not the relocated database. Suggestions & ideas are welcome! Thanks!
goldraven Posted March 27, 2002 Posted March 27, 2002 It would help if you included what platform the servers are as well as how you moved the files. It is possible that the files were changed somehow in the move to no longer be "multi-user". Do you have a copy of the client on the server also? If so, try to open them there to see if a) they are able to be opened and : if they are still set to be multi-user.
Angelo990 Posted March 27, 2002 Author Posted March 27, 2002 Thanks! Server is W2K server (filemaker server 5.5) and clients are filemaker pro 5.5 (mac & pc). The single database was moved as follows: stopped services on both servers Then copied database to filemaker server folder on the new box Started services That was all done aside from making sure the exact same settings from old server. I don't have a client copy on the server & will consider doing that. Not too sure about the multiuser setting. Thanks again!
goldraven Posted March 27, 2002 Posted March 27, 2002 You should definitely check to make sure the files are set to multi-user. Also, since you're on a windows server, you should check the error logs to see if there are any clues as to why the files didn't open.
Kurt Knippel Posted March 27, 2002 Posted March 27, 2002 Two possibilities exist. One is that the files did not actually open on the server, second is that the files are not set to multi-user. The fact that the clients can see the server indicates that this will be a pretty easy thing to fix.
Steven H. Blackwell Posted March 27, 2002 Posted March 27, 2002 When you say "see the server" if you mean thru FileMaker Pro and File-->Open-->Hosts, then you are correctly set up and the issue may be with Single Users or possibly MultiUser Hidden. Use the Remote Admin PlugIn to verify that the file is actually open. If "see the server" is via the OS networking, e.g. mapped drive, then you have file sharing turned on at the server. And you should turn this off. HTH Old Advance Man
goldraven Posted March 27, 2002 Posted March 27, 2002 OAM, I believe that is only relevant if the server is a Mac. Windows servers can share files without effecting the performance of FileMaker Server.
Kurt Knippel Posted March 28, 2002 Posted March 28, 2002 Neither has an actual effect on the performance of the server, but it has a SERIOUS effect on security. A database server should be a database server NOT a file server. Users should not have access to the files via any kind of shared volume. This is well documented by Filemaker and others, see the Best Practices documents on Filemaker's web site for more information on server setups.
Angelo990 Posted March 28, 2002 Author Posted March 28, 2002 Ok. The issue was somehow resolved. I was able to see the existing database on the new server by simply manually renaming the database & giving it the .fp5 extension. Then succesfully connected to it. a new issue arised: the database is missing some files (fiels, records) It's basically a contact database. Afterhours I will troubleshoot a bit more, however, I have done the copy & placed thing a few times & same issue. I dont know where the multiuser setting is check, I believe is on the end-client. That was not an issue though since I never checked that specific setting. I welcome and thanks for your help!
Angelo990 Posted March 29, 2002 Author Posted March 29, 2002 Nevermind. all along I was accessing the wrong copied database. You can actually copy db to another place on the network with no issues.
