FM Server with FM Unlimited

Featured Replies

Hey kids.

Somewhere on this forum - can't remember where - I read that it can cause problems if you have FMServer running on the same computer as a client version. I was wondering if anybody could confirm this, and let me know what the problems are.

We have a Windows NT 4.0 server running FMServer 5.0 (as a service, of course), and we also have Web interfaces for some of those files. So, we had to put FMUnlimited 5.0 on the same machine.

Is this a problem? Is there some way to share the files over the intranet with unlimited access, without actually having FMUnlimited running?

I'm a little worried.

Thanks.

Paul

Because you will suffer performance hit it is not recommended, but possible on NT4, W2K and XP Pro. Not on MacOS.

Why do you have FM server on that machine?

We used to just have FMUnlimited, because we have sixteen people who have to fill out timesheets and open dockets through a Web interface. Also, we have two (going on three) companies in this office, and are doing almost everything in FileMaker, so there are more than 50 files in use by 12 people. We were experiencing some performance problems, so they bought FMServer to alleviate that. So are you saying that it's not as much of a problem on Windows machines because FMServer runs as a service?

You may also wind up with a TCP/IP port conflict.

Sorry, OAM. I think I know what that means, but can you please explain what problems it might cause?

Thanks.

If both FMS and FMP try to access Port 5003 or the TCP stack at the same time, errors will occur.

Performance wise -- yes.

The problem with stack will show more on one machine and less on the other.

Just wild guessing here -- if all files will be hosted in server and none in Unlimited, there is less conflict chance.

If Unlimited is just using server files like client and it is serving them on web port like 80 or 591, there is again reduced chance of port conflict.

I would recommend buying small machine for FM server. New Celeron 1300 MHz with 256KB memory, fast 7200-RPM hard drive, 256MB memory, ASUS board and W2000 client will surprise you. Total cost less than 600 dollars. It will pay back in month.
