Relative Path Headache

Featured Replies

So at long last I've finished my offline update script ... wooooo !

BUT ... can't figure out how to create a universal relative path for both PC and Mac that points to a file on the desktop?

Maybe my brains have just turned to mush but can anybody help ... please???

Sorry should have specified 'universal' meaning something that will work on any installation on any PC or Mac?

Kindest,

Simon

Surely it would be simpler to include in your script a test for the platform and then a condition that uses a path adapted to the platform.

I can see that the problem is that the test needs to be for the platform to where the backup it headed, not the platform on which the script is running. A way of doing this would be to run a script on the target platform - which no doubt means you are chasing your tail as to do this requires specifying a path.

Sorry for the perhaps useless digression.

However, here is something that might work. Test for the existence of a file on the target i.e. c:boot.ini on Windows (I think this always exists). If it fails the target must be a Mac?

Perhaps it would easier if stored the offline db in the main filemaker directory and then if I tested for platform the path would just one of 2 choices??

And just provided a link from the desk to the offline db in the filemkaer directory?
