Is there anyway to make fields transparent or clear, or must they always contain a color?

you can choose not to have a fill for either line or background.

In Layout mode, choose the field, and then Fill Pattern. Choose the first box.

Read about Fill Patters in your help. Do a search of the Help or check the User Guide for:

Thank you, I did look in help but was looking under "field." Can you recommend a good manual to buy? I was just looking at FileMaker Pro 10: The Missing Manual, or FilemakerPro 10 Bible. Thanks.

Those two books are fine. However, before you buy a book, be sure that you have read the User Guide, worked though the tutorials, and tried out the tools by making a few files.
