Hello guys and gals,

You've probably read a thread like this a bunch of times but hear me out. Im 21 years old right now and I feel like my life is going nowhere. I haven't been to college because my mom lost her job a year and a half ago and I stayed at home to help her out with the bills/rent/food etc. So pretty much all the money that I saved for school is now gone. I've thought about what I want to do with my life and I first thought it was music, however that was short lived by the tones of Kanye West sample nerds appearing everywhere. I then decided that I would follow my true passion which is building/driving cars or motorcycles as I have built a few in my life. But it then dawned on me that I really wasn't going to make a good living getting my hands dirty every day and I'd much rather build my own cars and bikes than work on some old ladies honda mini van. So, I've decided I would try to do something with my computer seeing as I spend a lot of my free time on it. I just got Filemaker 10 pro and I need some advice on what I should do to practice and teach myself the program. Im saving up for a book on filemaker from my next pay check, do these books truly work and which would you recommend? I am not a noob to computers as I have been messing with them/building them for years. Currently I use a Mac, what is best for filemaker? I've researched but have not really found any concrete reasons why one is better than the other. Also, how long would you say you used filemaker before you were confident enough to charge for your skill? As in if I really break my balls everyday and try to cram in at least 3 hours of filemaker, would this be enough to learn the program within this year? I know everyones learning curve is completely different but I'd like to get a broad example from some of you.

I know this sounds like a cry for help, but I can't be living this meager life where I slave everyday at a restaurant for under minimum wage + crappy tips. I work two jobs and im tired of it, I know I have the tact and the integrity to achieve whatever I want, but I just need some guidance. I really wish I could go to school instead and get my computer science degree but that is just not feasible right now.

I might get flamed for this but I have the suit ready :)

Cheers in advanced. :)

Define a small project (like a personal music catalog database or some other idea) and try to execute it. You will learn by doing.. ask questions here and read everything you can find on FM, database and software engineering. Youl have accumulated enough knowledge in a year to be really dangerous... :) )

Yeah, we have read these kinds of stories long ago and it isn't new anymore.

I guess the bottom line is that people are now having a hard time to get a good living-- something that could be a good source of income... :)

But it's good to know that you are really trying hard to find a good one :

I agree with Kris. Just do your best and strive hard and you won't notice it that in the end you'll just find yourself on top.
