xTYATESx Posted May 17, 2010 Author Posted May 17, 2010 (edited) So i just started using FM and have really no experience at all but i am learning as the days go by. My plan is to create a reptile tracking database that will help keep track of my reptiles and possibly distribute it out to others. I have gotten a couple of the layouts done and am now at a dead stop on how to link feeding records, medical records, shedding records, defecation records, and a few others. I have setup the tables for each but i am having a hard time linking a specific reptile to its own feeding records, shedding records, defecation records, etc. I have a layout called "IRT Record List" this will hold each reptile. My next lay out is called "IRT Husbandry Records" which has three tables in it that are setup as portals. One portal is the feeding table, the others are shedding and defecation. I am trying to get each portal to link to that specific reptile in the "IRT Records List" I want to be able to create a new animal and then click the husbandry button and it will show that animals husbandry records. I do not want to use tabs. This is the software that i am trying to mimic : Link Its the same thing just a bit more advanced. Ill attach my own database that i have been working below. I have tried creating relationships in all types of ways. But when i think i get it i dont. It ends up just creating record for all animals. xTYATESx Posted May 17, 2010 Author Posted May 17, 2010 ooh ok well i just posted a new topic in the Relationships section on this site. which should be much more detailed. http://fmforums.com/forum/showtopic.php?tid/214834/pid/356635/post/last/m/1/#LAST
Kris M Posted May 17, 2010 Posted May 17, 2010 To Original poster... I did not intend to offend or discourage. I simply agreed with Vaughan because your skill/experience level was pretty obvious and some basic relational theory learning would be great place to start.. You wouldn't want to try and repair an engine if you had to ask what a wrench was right? Don't give up. Your just on the steep end of the learning curve. K
xTYATESx Posted May 17, 2010 Author Posted May 17, 2010 oo sorry i must have hit the wrong reply button. i was not directing that to you but Bruce. i am trying to figure this whole thing out. i know websites and stuff like that but not this stuff so its new to me.
Lee Smith Posted May 17, 2010 Posted May 17, 2010 Hi Tyler, This is a window's runtime file. I would have preferred to be linked to the site instead, where I could read about the file, and maybe see some screen shots, and download if I felt I need it in order to help you. You can change the word "[color:blue]Link" in the "[color:blue]Text for Link" box to anything you want. In this case, I would have used "vts.zip" with a note that it was a window runtime file. Personally, I have no interest in downloading a file from a strange site without knowing something about the site, and the linked file. Lee
xTYATESx Posted May 17, 2010 Author Posted May 17, 2010 sorry about the Lee The link to to the download is a cdn site i use for my site. Here are links to his pages Main Link : Main Page User Guide : User Guide
David Jondreau Posted May 17, 2010 Posted May 17, 2010 ooh ok well i just posted a new topic in the Relationships section on this site. which should be much more detailed. http://fmforums.com/forum/showtopic.php?tid/214834/pid/356635/post/last/m/1/#LAST There's no Topic from you in the Relationships section.
Lee Smith Posted May 17, 2010 Posted May 17, 2010 Hi Tyler, I have merged your two threads. Please do not double post. Double posting can be a waste of everyones time. Ours because we have to jump between your threads to read the advice, in order to ensure we are not suggesting the same thing that someone else has already provided. Yours because, there are often more than one way to accomplish the same thing in FileMaker. If you have ever tried to follow the advice spread over a couple of threads, you will find it hard to absorb the advice because it will be in chunks and probably describing different ways to accomplish your goal. We know that the Forum can be confusing trying to figure out where to post a question. All we ask is for you to try and match one of the topic areas to a function or feature that you think might be part of your question. Not to worry, if you miss it a mile we can always move it if it needs to be. HTH Lee
Lee Smith Posted May 17, 2010 Posted May 17, 2010 Hi DJ, You're to quick for me, or I'm moving kind of slow today. I was typing out my explanation as to why I merged the two threads. :giggle:
comment Posted May 17, 2010 Posted May 17, 2010 In the interest of moving this forward: Why don't you start with something simple, see how it works, then expand on it? Reptiles.zip
xTYATESx Posted May 17, 2010 Author Posted May 17, 2010 ill try that and then work out into the bigger one. see me being a person more into web development i tend to design first then setup the backbone
xTYATESx Posted May 18, 2010 Author Posted May 18, 2010 ok so i tried using you example and the only problem is that if you do not have a current feeding record in place already then it will not work you have to physically go to that layout and create a new one. is there a way to have a new record automatically created?
xTYATESx Posted May 18, 2010 Author Posted May 18, 2010 when you delete every record in your example and then create a new animal the feeding table should have a default record setup with that animal. if not then it would be kind of time consuming to have to go into the feeding layout and create a new record
comment Posted May 18, 2010 Posted May 18, 2010 Well, you could have a "New Feeding" button on the Reptiles layout, with a script that goes to the Feedings table and creates a new RELATED record (and perhaps pre-fills the current date). Or you could have a portal to Feedings on the Reptiles layout and enter new feedings directly into it (provided you enable this in the relationship's settings). Or both.
