Best way to ensure a portal is up-to-date?

I have 2 portals on a layout that are displayed across multiple users. These two portals represent the status of a particular item, one portal represents unapproved and the other represented denied. What is the best way to ensure that if a user sitting on the layout is always seeing up-to-date information? I can script a refresh window script to refresh every 5 seconds or so, but that seems a little inefficient.

Thoughts?
