Can you have a relationship to a relationship?

I have a portal showing item, model and part number all coming from one related file.

The item and model are fields in the related file. The part is a relationship to a third file.

When I add the part into the portal only one part shows for all items, and models.

Is it because its a relationship to a relationship?

You can't have a relationship based upon a relationship but you can display data from a related file several relationships away. For example:

File 1

File 2

File 3

File 1 displays records in a portal from File 2. File 2 displays fields from File 3 that you want to view in File 1.

To do this, create a calculated field in File 2 defined as:

Part Number (calculation) = File 3:: Part Number.

This new field is now "native" to File 2 and can be displayed in the File 1 portal. You cannot, however, have a relationship in File 1 with the field "Part Number" on the right side. "Part Number" in File 2 is unstored and can't be indexed. -bd
