Richard Corso Posted September 28, 2010 Posted September 28, 2010 I was hoping that some one could give me a hand. I have three computers at home on a network, two XP's and one Vista. If I open a FileMaker DB on any one of my computers, the other two can open it up using Open Remote. But when I take the same DB to work and open it up, none of the other computers can see it. I will not be back to work for two days. But I think that I have now know whats wrong and if some one could let me know if I am on the wright track. At work they have a camera system that can be viewed over the internet that uses port 80 forwarding and here at home I do not. Do I need to set up the IP address for the DB on the router? (We are only using two computers to access the DB and are not using FM Server)
Carl Horton Posted September 29, 2010 Posted September 29, 2010 If you are only trying to view your database from your work computers hosted by your work computers (so everything is on the same network), then there is no reason to make any configuration changes on the router (unless of course there are already custom configurations that may be preventing you from access, but by default that is typically not the case). The fact that you can see your database shared on your home network means your permissions on the file itself must be correct. So, are versions of FileMaker different at work versus at home? How about the versions of the operating systems each of the computers are running? I have heard of some issues regarding Windows 7 that prevents Open Remote from working in some cases. If I were you I'd make sure my sharing permissions are correct (the FMApp privilege is on), make sure I have setup the host copy of FileMaker to share the file, and if you still can't connect when on the same network try portscanning the host computer from one of the clients. You should see ports 5003 (FileMaker data) open. If not, your network does need investigation.
