xls files and scribe

I can get scribe to pull cells from an xlsx file but it doesn't seem to work with just xls files. am I doing something wrong?

Update: I misinterpreted the functionality. Scribe is only able to use the getfileastext function on the older XLS files. You are only able to get the text from an individual cell using the newer .xlsx file type.
