I have a typical field calculation

I don't see anything "typical" in your calculation. On the contrary: I'd say your data model is flawed, as indicated by having Phase_Name_1, Phase_Name_2, Phase_Name_3, etc. fields.

Perhaps you should start your description at an earlier point.
