What methods do you use for displaying status icons on your layouts?

ie. Create a calculation field that has a result type of container. The unstored calculation result references an icon that is stored in a field of a table related by a cartesian join.

I've started using conditionally formatted text that is formatted using one of the symbol fonts like Wingdings. Not as nice looking as "real" graphics but functional and more efficient.
