set the colour to be anything hex (background-color)

works as long as the first value is NOT alphanumneric

99AAFF works, so does 9AF

however A9F and anything above just gives white

I am not able to reproduce this issue. When I use ?background-color=A9F I get a deep blue background color. What is the URL that you are using? Also, please make sure that you are using the latest version of SuperContainer Server, which is 2.77.

Mac 10.5.6 FMA11.02 and Server 11

Remove the pound from your URL before the A9F and that should fix it.
