What is your recommendation?

Is there a FMP function I can use to open a video file with VLC or it would be better for me to write a quick Applescript program ?

If you are just trying to open a file to have it play with the default media player, then you should be able to use Open URL, and give it the path of your media file.

If VLC isn't your default, it might just be better to use AppleScript.
