Raybaudi Posted June 7, 2011 Posted June 7, 2011 If there are any questions regarding what i am trying to achieve please dont hesitate. My question is simple: what are you trying to achieve ?
Jess Ottman Posted June 8, 2011 Author Posted June 8, 2011 Title: my apologies i was supposed to post this question against my previous post. Here is what im trying to achieve. CONDITIONAL VALUE LISTS STOPS WORKING AFTER 3 FIELDSPost: Hi, Im creating a database that assembles hoses and parts using conditional value lists and graphics. I have a table called data entry this is where all my input gets added. So i have sizes 08,12,16,24,32. Lets say im doing 08 first, then i have the name of my hose which is in the same record as 08 next i have my fittings so lets say i have A B C D E all against 08.So i have five records altogether with (08,hose,A)(08,HOSE, and so on. Now i have around ten fields that eliminate data when the previous is selcted but i wont go through all since i only have a problemwith my material field. In this i put certain material finishes against the complying fittings, ex.A=1,2,3 B=1,2,4 AND C=2,4,5. Each material finsh is added to data entry as a record. so 3 Records might look like:(08/hose/A/A),(08/HOSE/A/,(8/HOSE/A/C) So if i select 08 i should see only hoses available in that size :Yes i select hose i see all compatible fittings to the hose in that size:YES If however i select material finish every finsh option comes up. So if i select A as my fitting i should see 1,2,3 instead i see 1,2,3,4 Ive rechecked my input and the relationships an they are fine the relationship is set up as DATA ENTRY = HOSE ORDER(LINKED BY SIZE) MATERIAL = HOSE ORDER (LINKED BY NAME TO MATERIAL) I have a different table for each field eg size, hose, fitting left, fitting right, material and so on.that is linked to a field in the table hose order. Apologies if my explaination isnt clear but any help greatly appreciated as there is alot of work gone into this many thanks Hi All Was told to post here instead so i could get the best advice. Been told that i need my structure reviewed and reworked so any help appreciated. Am willing to change my structure to get it working the best possible way Thanks Jess 1
Jess Ottman Posted June 8, 2011 Author Posted June 8, 2011 Hi all, Ive posted 2 questions up about my database problem but i think i need to explain a basic use and il try to figure the rest out. How many conditional value lists can you have? Im looking to make a hose configurator which is made up of 11 fields. ( Not all fields will be shown for the order only selection). If i put the first field seletion as a show all values and the rest of the fields can be set to include only related values. If i can create a multiple conditonal value list how would i go about setting it up? many thanks for any help Jess
Jess Ottman Posted June 10, 2011 Author Posted June 10, 2011 Hi all Ok so ive looked around and only seem to have found posts that only go to three level and cant seem to find any that go beyond that point. Is there another way of doing this without using a multi level value list? A script perhaps or a calculation? I am at a loss and am all ears to suggesdtions and advice Thanks Jess
comment Posted June 10, 2011 Posted June 10, 2011 Ok so ive looked around and only seem to have found posts that only go to three level and cant seem to find any that go beyond that point. You go to from three to four levels the same way you go from two to three. Is there another way of doing this without using a multi level value list? I am still vague about what "this" is.
Jess Ottman Posted June 16, 2011 Author Posted June 16, 2011 Hi Comment thank you very much for your reply. I had thought i was doing it the same way i had gone to 2-3 and tried to do the same and go to 3-4. I was told that my structure needs reworking. I have data entry table and a graphic build order table. In GRAPHIC BUILD ORDER i have Dash as my first field which is related to DATA ENTRY and says "include all values" After DASH i have a NAME field, I relate the field in GRAPHIC BUILD ORDER to NAME field in DATA ENTRY and i select "include related values" I assume i do the same with the rest do i? Apologies for lack of knowledge, i had thought i was on the right track obviously not.
comment Posted June 16, 2011 Posted June 16, 2011 I was told that my structure needs reworking. That's very likely. As I (and others) said, it's hard to understand what are you trying to achieve. A "data entry" table is pretty meaningless - practically any table is used to enter data (hence "database"). The file you have posted doesn't help either - although I would guess all those tables should be one table of Parts. Perhaps you should put conditional value lists aside and start at the beginning.
Jess Ottman Posted June 17, 2011 Author Posted June 17, 2011 I apologise for not explaining clearer. The trouble is i have started again, twice now. I am trying to achieve selections that limit the the options in the in the next field depending on the choice made in the previous. What we would like to create is an intelligent system which allows our team to configure a hose assembly product.I use the word "intelligent" because we are trying to make the selections only give options to give the correct components that will configure the hose.Never the wrong size or fitting. Therefore eliminating needless human errors, as there are many when configuring great quantities at any one time. What I thought I had to do was put all my information into records in a table from which they would linked via values list to graphic build order "looking at" "DATA ENTRY" and therefore limiting choices as you go. In this table graphic build order I had size field “showing all values” and from then on the rest of the fields "showing only related values" in the table they were in, which was hose build order There are 11 fields in total. The reason there are so many is to do with coding, someone will select the values and a part number is created unknown to them. They don’t need to think about it. For all these fields we have supplied the limitations in an excel file from which we import them.
Jess Ottman Posted June 21, 2011 Author Posted June 21, 2011 Hi all i have solved my problem in my database at long last! Thanks Jess
