Not highlight active portal row

My portal rows when clicked by the user highlight in an ugly brown colour. Also, the portal has a picture in a container field that turns to a negative. There is a button on the portal and a scroll bar on one of the fields, so I can't put a mask over the portal to stop any row being made active.

Is there a simple way to overcome this?
