Keeping font style/formatting during a paste in field

I have returned to Filemaker after some time and have forgotten how to insure that a field retains the font formatting when you paste from a copied source outside of Filemaker.

Much faster and sometimes more accurate to paste, rather than retype, but every time I do this the field shows the font style from the source.

Thanks in advance.

Do you want to retain the source text's original formatting, or remove it?

To remove it, set the field with an auto-enter calculation = TextFormatRemove( <fieldname> ) and de-select the option to replace only if empty.

Sorry Vaughn, to be clear I want the pasted text from source to change to the setting in the Filemaker destination field.

Under 'Field Behavior', I have the option enabled, 'Synchronize with Field's Font' but that is not doing it, not sure what that is for.

Filemaker is atypical on a Mac, in that if you hold down the Option-Command or Shift-Option-Command keys with the V key or use the menu "Paste with Style" in other apps, text is pasted with the style of the destination field.

I followed your instructions but not all of the formatting is being altered. It is changing the color but not the font style or size.

Example:

Original text

Arial

Black

Bold

18 point

Should be...

Destination text

Palatino

Grey

Regular

14 point

BTW Anyone ever tell you that your avatar looks like Jack Nicholson?

Well, there is an old FileMaker trick that may be useful: paste into the field, then immediately perform the "undo" command to remove the formatting from the pasted text. (Issuing the undo command a second time undoes the paste itself.)

I followed your instructions but not all of the formatting is being altered. It is changing the color but not the font style or size.

The TextFormatRemove( self ) function will remove ALL formatting. Check that the option "do not replace existing value" is not selected in the field definition.

BTW Anyone ever tell you that your avatar looks like Jack Nicholson?

<Inspector Clouseau heavy French accent>That is not my avatar.</> :D

It's still got the extra 5 stars from ye olde FM Forums.

If you hold down the Option key, the Paste command changes to "Paste Text Only" - i.e. plain text with no styling. Plain text is what you need to get the field's contents to take on the styles defined for the field on the layout.

Thanks all. Vaughan, I will definitely be using your method for other applications. Comment, this is exactly what I was looking for, convenience at the time of paste.

Not sure why I am not getting email notifications on my posts and replies...

Thanks again.
