Newbies limey Posted June 5, 2001 Newbies Share Posted June 5, 2001 Recently installed 5.5 on three machines.(Home Ethernet) Everything was fine for about a week but then one of the Mac's started to Dial-up (Remote Access) whenever FM5.5 was launched. Now the other two machines have started to do this. I have trashed Prefs(all three), reloaded(2) turned off ALL networking(3) but still get the dialup at launch. I have removed ALL FM Files from each machine. FM5.0 did NOT do this. it does NOT go anywhere once connection is establised with my ISP. :?? Lefo
I brought this same thing up in the FileMaker Pro 5 section above. No one had an answer for me. Here is my previous post ... quote: Whenever I launch FMP 5.5 for Mac (OS 9.1), as the splash screen comes up, I start to dial out to my ISP. I have disabled the plug ins for auto updates, but this still happens. Is there another setting I should be looking for? Newbies lonestar Posted June 9, 2001 Newbies Share Posted June 9, 2001 Long shot, but just in case: In the TCP/IP control panel, select "options;" set the following window to "active" and "load only when needed." Hope this helps.

Hope this helps. Hi, Already set up this way, but thanks. Good suggestion. It only happens with FMP. I have IE 5 set to load a blank page, Entourage starts up w/o dialing ... all other internet apps behave wonderfully. I wonder if this is some kind of hidden registration tool that's not getting what it needs and keeps dialing up. Or, it simply doesn't know when to stop. Lefo
Okay. I've removed plug ins, I've trashed preferences, and I've gotten rid of all 4.x elements, and I'm still automatically dialing up when I launch FMP 5.5 for Mac. All Web Companion and Networking selections have been turned OFF, and dial up begins when the splash screen is indicating that it's "Initializing ..." so it's happening as FMP is loading. Since there doesn't seem to be an answer here, is there anyway this can be reported to FileMaker, Inc.? I've gone to the web site, but the only way I see to REPORT a bug is to PAY to REPORT it, and that seems wrong. Any help would be greatly apprecaited. I'm getting really tired of having to click the Open Transport "Cancel" button whenever I launch FMP. TIA Lefo
LiveOak
I wonder if for some strange reason FMP is triggering a dial-up PPP connection on launch? You didn't mention the OS version, but take a look around the ARA/Internet dial-up stuff??? -bd
Lefo
I received the following from FileMaker today ... quote: This is an issue we have been seeing lately, and I am involved in getting it properly documented. What we have at present is this: Issue: When launching FileMaker Pro 5.5 on a Mac, the modem automatically attempts to connect to the internet. FileMaker Pro 5.0 did not cause this behavior. Also, when opening a file set to multi-user, or when choosing "open remote" from the File menu or when clicking the "Hosts" button in the Open File dialog, if the selected protocol in preferences is TCP/IP, the modem will automatically attempt to connect to the internet. Explanation: Web Companion and RDAC seem to be causing the system to automatically dial the modem upon the launch of the application. Testing is ongoing. Development is aware of this issue. Workarounds: 1. Drag the Web Companion and the RDAC out of the Extensions subfolder of the FileMaker folder. This will prevent the system from calling automatically the modem when launching FileMaker Pro 5.5, but will preclude serving data over the web or making remote ODBC queries. 2. Change the network protocol in the FileMaker preferences dialog to AppleTalk. This will prevent the system from automatically calling the modem when opening a file set to multi-user, or when choosing "open remote" from the File menu or when clicking the "Hosts" button in the Open File dialog, but will also preclude cross-platform file-sharing with Filemaker Pro. 3. For OSX, go to the System Preferences, select "Internal Modem" from the "Configure Menu", then choose the "PPP" tab. Click the "PPP Options" button. Uncheck the first option, "Connect automatically when starting TCP/IP applications". For Mac Classic OS, open the Remote Access Control Panel, click the "Options" button. Choose the "Protocol" tab. Uncheck the first option, "Connect automatically when starting TCP/IP applications". This will prevent the system from automatically calling the modem when working with FileMaker Pro or any other application. As you can see, each of these workarounds has its own advantages and drawbacks, depending on what you're trying to do and when you're seeing this behavior. It sounds like a bug fix is in the works. Newbies limey Posted June 14, 2001 Author Newbies Share Posted June 14, 2001 A clean install of the OS solved my problem with the dial-up. However, I am NOT tempted to try for web sharing again! The "fixes" are a little draconian but hopefully a bugfix from FileMaker will solve all the problems. So, one down and one to go. All they have to do now is solve the "disappearing host" thing and I will be happy. Thanks to all who replied with suggestions, all noted.
