ngwaltne Posted January 8, 2002 Posted January 8, 2002 I am new to networking so please help. I want to set up a LAN using our school districts WAN. I have developed a database for our school. It will serve about 40 clients. This week I will order the server and software. The clients will be both Win and Mac. Will a Mac server work, or will I need software for the Win boxes to see the Mac server?
d94dsj Posted January 8, 2002 Posted January 8, 2002 Hi! I don't really know what you mean by "I want to set up a LAN using our school districts WAN"...but assuming that you already have a working LAN: A Mac server will work fine, just make sure to use TCP/IP and you will be able to connect from both Mac and Windows clients. So you need a FileMaker Server 5.5 for MacOS (if you want to use a Mac server computer) plus FileMaker Pro 5.5 software/licenses for all 40 clients, MacOS and Windows versions. If you do not currently have the software, I guess you should go for a volume license agreement, unless your school has some kind of educational agreement/discount. Good luck! /Daniel
ngwaltne Posted January 8, 2002 Author Posted January 8, 2002 Thanks Daniel, Will it matter if the clients have dynamic IP addresses? Will I be able to set a range in the server? Danke im Voraus

I'm experienced in PC and UNIX network- and system administration, but not really on the MacOS platform. But if you want DHCP (for dynamic IP address assignment), I should think that there is support for it on the Mac server so you can assign IP address ranges. And if it's not built-in, there are free OpenSource DHCP implementations for download. /Daniel
