irvingm Posted April 17, 2002 Posted April 17, 2002 I have designed a database on mac. I move this to PC, develop it on PC, burn a disc. When the user copies the solution to his PC, he has to change the properties ie deselect "read only". This is a pest for unskilled users. Any suggestions?
Steven H. Blackwell Posted April 17, 2002 Posted April 17, 2002 Create a compressed, self-extracting archive of the files. Burn that archive to the CD. When the suer double clicks it, the user is prompted to save the extracted archive with the files to a hard drive. That addressed the read only property. HTH Old Advance Man
danjacoby Posted April 19, 2002 Posted April 19, 2002 BTW, this isn't a Filemaker problem; it's a Windows problem. Any time you burn a CD and then download the files to a Windows machine, the files download as Read-Only. My guess is that this won't change any time soon, as the folks I talked to at Microsoft don't seem to think this is a problem. Meanwhile, OAM's solution, in which the compressed file becomes Read-Only, but the files compressed within it are preserved, is the only workable answer.
