If a field is referenced in an unstored calc from another table is just that result sent down the pipe or is the whole record from that other table cached and then the result is parsed on the client side?

I believe a global field (calc?) can cause the entire record to be loaded (sent down the pipe), but I haven't heard that an unstored calc causes the entire record to be loaded.

I doubt my answer helps much, and I don't even know if what I said was accurate, I'm just trying to get a conversation going for this, because I'd like to know too.
