I need to have text change to either blue or red depending on if a task is past due (red) or due today (blue)

Ah, an oldie but a goodie...

You'll want two calc fields, each to return either the contents of the main field or nothing, depending on the current date & due date. Lay those fields on top of the main field, and select the appropriate text color for each of them.

I didn't think you could set the color of a calc field...?

Set the text color of the field in layout mode.
