I was wondering how to set the fill option to be tranparent so that the color from behind shows through. For instance, I have a portal that has alternating shaded lines, but when I insert a field, the field is white and eliminates the shading.

You need to select the field in layout mode and "fill" it with the transparent selection. This can be done using the paint bucket in the status bar or the Format menu-->field borders-->fill.
