Transmitting a file by email

Featured Replies

Not sure if this belongs here, but no other forum seems to fit either.

We have a file that is really very simple (three tables, one relationship). One of three persons can work on this file. We have agreed that whenever one of us makes any changes to the file, they will immediately email the modified copy to the other two persons. I know there are better solutions to this, but we don't want to get into that just now.

Here's the problem: Whenever one of us sends the file to the other two it comes through as document in unknown format in binary, even though the file has an .fmp extension. When downloaded, the file appears on the receiving computers with no icon. Double clicking on the document does not open it. What we have to do is either open FMP, then open the file from the File/Open menu, or right click on the file then open it Using FMP. Once the file is open and then closed, it then appears with an FMP icon.

We have two Macs and one PC among us. All are running FMP 11 Advanced.

What must we do to get the file to appear as a true .fmp file (with the FMP icon) when it is downloaded?

ZIP the file first.

Are you using .fmp as the extension?  For Filemaker 11 it should be .fp7

As Brian stated, ensure that the file extension has .fmp7 or .fmp12 and nothing else after that. If you see something like .fmp7.img or something then you need to correct the file extension manually by renaming it to "filename.fmp7" or "filename.fmp12"
