Hi All,

Please be gentle. New to filemaker and FM forum! Did a search and didn't see any items on this! which probably tells me I have gone down a dark lonely road here!

This is my first FM database. I have setup a layout with a list of items. I want to see the list, select a row and view detail of a selected item on the same layout to the right ( in pro at least).

I elected to use the method I had seen posted somewhere along the lines of creating a global selected field in the principle TO for the sibling TO. For example : a customer has many orders.   The detail is then presented to the left of the portal list. I have a slider with portals in each panel based on occurrences of the selected record TO. The whole relationship tree has built up off this "Selected" TO . It works ... but I smell a rat?

i went down this path because I initially saw a lot of stuff on portals in popovers / popovers in portals etc not working out! I am starting to think popovers and sliders / tabs in popovers may work and I have made this too hard.

I also see an issue with this "Selected" TO not working in a multi user environment as one user would change the "Selected" ID in the principle TO and this would change another users selected record ?

Any tips would be appreciated !

To single out one of your questions: could it be that the two "different" users were logged in with the same account?

In this case global fields (and changes to them) would apply to both of them.

You might already be aware of this: another potential for unexpected behavior when using globals fields are global fields which weren't empty at the time the file was uploaded to the server. In this case, they will contain the value from the last local user session - unless it's changed in the course of the current user session. This results in sort of a "reset" when the file is opened.

Hey thanks for that! I have had a temporary brain failure and forgot global fields were local! and I hadn't emptied it when I accessed it on go so the last user selected field did show up which got me worried!

Clear now!
