How to use blank layouts for optimizing performance

I have a layout that contains a list of records.  If I want to use a script to sort those records do I:

1) Go a layout for that set of records that is blank, (ie. doesn't have any fields displayed) >>>

2) Perform the sort >>>

3) Go to List Layout to display those sorted records

 

Is this the correct sequence to make this happen?
