linked pop up list

Featured Replies

Hi, I have created a database in FMP and I have 2 pop up menus one is comany name and the other is the size of paper eg:a1,a2,a3,a4,a5 but the sizes are all different to each company. So the question is, is there a way of selecting a company name and it bringing up all the sizes that relate to that company that I have selected in the comany pop up menu box. (I dont know much about relationships) I have created another database with two menu fields, company and Size and have created the 3 companys (company 1, 2 and 3) and in the other field, sizes 1 - 14. I then created 14 records. matching comapany 1 to sizes 1-6 company 2 to sizes 7-10 and company 3 to sizes 11-14.

I really need a straight forward way of understanding how to do this as I am very new to File Maker Pro.

For example

I choose Adidas as the comany

the second pop up menu brings up all products that relate to Adidas

On the next record I choose Nike

the second pop up menu brings up all products that relate to Nike

Thanks for any help

Chris

Let's call your first file Companies and your related file Sizes.

The following steps are all done in the Companies file:

1. Define a value list call company. Click the "use values from field" option. Then click the Specify File option, and choose Sizes, then choose the company field.

2. It sounds like you know how to set up pop-up menus, so assign the company value list from step 1 to your company field.

3. Define a relationship to the Sizes file based on the company field.

4. Define a value list called sizes. Click the "use values from field" option as before, but this time, click "only related values," then choose the sizes relation from step 3 and choose the ::sizes field.

5. Assign the value list from step 4 to your sizes field.

And there you have it!
