formatting merge fields

How can I set and change the font of a merge field that will appear in a mail merge letter?  Especially when it is a different font from the font as used in other layouts?

I am having special difficulties with merge field numbers that are dollar amounts.  I cannot get Filemaker tout commas in the right places of the merged 5 or 6 figure number.

Formatting the *font*: In Layout mode, highlight the relevant section in the text block (the merge field) and use the Inspector to change the font, size, bolding etc.

Formatting the *number format*: You can apply a number formatting to the entire text block, the same as for a field. If you need finer control, I believe the answer is still to create a calc field that has the formatting you desire for the number, and use that as the merge field.
