So I have imported contact names in a fm contacts file from excel. Now how do I add the unique id numbers?

I have just figured it out. Sorry for the inconvenience. Hope there is nothing else I needed to do with the import.

I don't see why you did not auto-enter them while importing. And we have no context to your question. If you have imported them into an empty table, you can define (if you haven't already) a ContactID field as a Number field with auto-entered serial number. Then show all records, click into the ContactID field and do Records > Replace Field Contents… > Replace with serial numbers + Update serial number in Entry Options.
