FileMaker: Database Development & Programming for Scientists

For more information and registration: https://faes.org/events/biotech-94-filemaker-database-development-programming-scientists-beginner-level-2-day-hands

Workshop is open to general public. Registration occurs on a first-come, first-served basis. The deadline forregistration is one week before the first day of the course. If you are unable toregister before the deadline, please email: [email protected] or call 301-496-7977 for space availability.

For NIH users: Payment approval and authorization is done through your AO or labmanager. Receiving lab approval does not constitute enrollment. Fellows or those being sponsored by their lab can enroll using this form while waiting for authorization of payment.

Workshops generally run from 9:00am - 5:00pm.

Hey Scientists, Clinicians, Researchers - Do you have a lot of data sitting on excel files in your computer? Have you ever wondered what is the best way to effectively store, manage and share that data with other scientists? Then this workshop is for you!!

Hey Bioinformatics, Statistics and Data Scientists - Have you ever wondered what to do with all the results and data that comes out of your analysis pipelines. What is the best way to share that data with investigators and other scientists, how to build web-interfaces and layouts so that others can effectively utilize and query your data. Then this workshop is for you!!

Course Description:

This 2 day hands-on workshop will cover basic database programming for scientists, clinicians, bioinformatics analysts and their research. Lecture topics will focus on database platform FileMaker but will also provide a broad background about database theory and their applications in scientific research: focusing on creating and using databases for project and data management; designing user-interface for databases; report generation; sample storage and tracking; data analysis and data sharing. Participants get opportunity to work with NIH scientists and bioinformatics experts with over 30 years of experience currently using databases in large and small NIH laboratory settings during this intensive workshop.

Lecture and Hands-on Topics:
Why databases; Why FileMaker; FileMaker basics; Planning and creating databases; Importing data; Presenting and manipulating data; Analyzing data; Exporting and sharing data; User Interface designs; Report generation; Creating Solutions for data management.

Who should attend:

  • Researchers, clinicians, biomedical students, administrators, and project managers interested in developing and using databases for all their research and administration needs.
  • Programmers and interested in learning basic FileMaker and database usage in a scientific setting.
  • Program administrators who are interested in understanding database usage and potential applications in their own program.
  • Clinicians who are interested in developing data storage and data sharing applications for their data.
  • Bioinformatics scientists interested in developing solutions and applications for the storage, management and sharing of sequencing data and results from their analysis pipelines.

Prerequisites:
Users should be comfortable with basic computer operations.

Comprehensive Binder
Contains all notes, protocols, and reference material needed. No additional books are required.

All course material needed will be provided. Sample files and databases will be available and developed during the course. However, participants are encouraged to bring their own data files, sample files, and ideas so that they can also work with these during the course. All participants will leave with database template files for various uses in the lab, clinical and other scientific environments.
For questions regarding course, please contact Bailey Kessing at [email protected] or Shalabh Suman at [email protected]

You are welcome to bring your own excel spreadsheets; data files; laboratory equipment output files and project ideas.

Credit
Although no grades are given for courses, each participant will receive Continuing Education Units (CEUs) based on the number of contact hours.   One CEU is equal to ten contact hours.   Upon completion of this course each participant will receive a certificate, showing completion of the workshop and 2.8 CEUs.
