  1. Aha! Thankye for stopping my futile search through the manual. I suppose FM-corp doesn't mind then, license-wise, that we are forced to install the same program on a Mac and a PC just to be able to use all of its functions (that's just my rhetorical irreverent self; no need for a response). I wonder if they're hiring manual writers down there? Oh well... Onward. AB the misled [This message has been edited by Ambush Bug (edited March 02, 2001).]
  2. Hello. I have run into a similar stonewall regarding making a runtime for Windows. Am I to understand, now, that you cannot bind a solution on a Mac to be used on a PC, at all? If not, then what's the point of adding the solution extension and changing the file extensions when creating the runtime? If it _is_ possible to bind a solution on a Mac to be used on a PC, then what am I doing wrong? (I ask that generally, so as to solicit a "procedure" of sorts not found in the handy dandy FM-Dev manual). I do indeed change the extensions, add an extension to the runtime (i use the default), and I also bundle the FM 'extensions' and 'support' folders (can't recall the names right now) onto the CD-R with the runtime... When I go to run on a PC, what's missing are the support files. TIA all, AB
  3. quote: Originally posted by jwallace: I think I can make it work. I am restricting access to the menus with a plug-in. You know how non-computer people can get lost real fast using menus to print and make new records and things. Using a menu goes against one of the main ideas in this particular set-up which is to keep everything button point and click. Thanks Couldja point me in the direction of that there plug in? I'm also disturbingly in need of such. Thankye. AB
  4. I don't know whether it means that the window will simply open with no menu commands, ala Real or Visual Basic, or if it will commandeer the entire screen for its use. I'm hoping that there is a way to have custom (meaning I could start from scratch and make as many as I want) menu commands using Developer? TIA AB
  5. I have FM5 for the Mac. When I make a container field, I can import Movie, and Quicktime, but not sound. Also, I remember in V.4 I could double click on the container field to have a record/play interface come up, but now that does not happen. Am I missing some add-ons? Has it changed? Am I silly-blind? Thanks goes to helpful ideas. AB
  6. Thanks for responding, Kurt I understand why the records lock, and am reconciled to that. What I'm wondering about is whether when Person A and subsequently Person B are both looking at the same portal/layout, one will have locked the other out of every related record through the portal as well as the one they are sitting in. That seemed to happen, and I was surprised that one user could be locking more than one record. We had trouble just highlighting portal rows without getting the error message. If this is the case, then I will need to get rid of the portals all together (and wonder why they even exist). Unfortunately, Person A and Person B have to be working on the same info, so there's no getting around that. Of course, if we could have enter-able fields in the header of List View, then I wouldn't have to worry about using portals, but alas... Has anyone had success in using portals over a network? .ta ta. Herr Bugg
  7. Hello All I'm jumping head first into the world of networking a FM solution which relies heavily on portals, and I tested it out last night. The disturbing fact I discovered is that the dialog box warning the user that someone else is modifying the record pops up for numerous portal rows, no matter what record the first user is in. It's almost like they are in many records because of the portal, which makes sense in a way but is pretty annoying. I thought that portals were like windows, rather than doors. I don't have any field in the portal with entry capability, and use it only as a way to go to the related record (via button) for data entry. What I want is for the user to be able to click on the portal row without Filemaker thinking that they are entering that record. Is there a workaround? Also, is there a way to capture this particular error message? Also, will Server edition take care of this problem? Thanks again for sharing. Herr Bugg
