  1. Hi James Thanks for your reply. No, the option to create a table on import doesn't seem to be in FM7. Regards Dave
  2. Hi everyone It's been a while since I visited here - and a while since I've used FM... i can't remember... is there a quick way to create lots of fields in a table? I have multiple spreadsheets, each with ~15-20 fields that I want to convert to a singe db with multiple tables. Is there a way to do this without creating each field manually? Thanks Dave
  3. Thanks Ray... Your solution to avoid the re-draw did the trick. I had to fiddle a bit to get the tabbing to work nicely as I wanted to apply this on two consecutive fields in the portal. Now it works great! Thanks again Dave
  4. Hi Ugo Thanks for the reply. I still can't get it to work. Does it make any difference if the value list is from another file? (I tried it using a value list in the same file and it works fine) Dave
  5. This is a great tip... thanks everybody! But I can't get it to work properly in a portal. It works fine on the first record in the portal, if I try to display the value list for the second record the script takes me back to the first record (and displays the value list). What have I done wrong? Thanks Dave
  6. I tried the first route... I must have done something wrong because the value list worked in the services file but not in the invoices file... your second suggestion worked a treat! Thanks for getting me going again... Ciao Dave
  7. Hi guys... I'm stuck...again! I have two files - an invoice file and a file containing a list of all possible services. In the service item file I have flagged some of the services as "hot" items and want to display these items as a value list in the Invoice file. I created a value list in the service item file that displays the "hot" items correctly (based on a relationship), but it won't display in the Invoice file... I'm sure I'm being dim, but I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. Please help... Thanks Dave
  8. Ugo Sorry to be a nuisance... the link in your post doesn't work. I did a search, but didn't find the modified version. Dave E
  9. Ugo You're a star! I've been trying to do this for a week... and your first sample (Type-ahead) is almost exactly what I wanted. The only modification I'd like to make is to be able to toggle between displaying prospects only or clients only, or showing all records in the top portal (relationship: selfoncfilter). How should I do this? I tried a few ideas, but without success... Thanks again Dave E
  10. Thanks Ugo... I think I've got it right... the 'OSX Look Portal' thread was a great help. -Dave
  11. Thanks Ugo... that's a very elegant solution. Is it possible to get all the 'leaves' to display in the right-hand portal, instead of below the 'branch' headings? (I don't need to re-classify the 'leaves' once they're on the appropriate 'branch') Regards Dave
  12. I fixed the "jumping back" problem by adding a step to script to remember the portal row... it keeps the cursor at the bottom of the portal, which is a lot better than jumping back to the top of the list. Could I extend the problem a little? In the same data base I have a huge number of parts. Naturally I'd like to continue the concept of a "hotlist", but scrolling through 6500 part numbers to flag approximately 100 is tedious to say the least. The parts are arranged in categories eg: nuts, bolts, washers. Is there a way to populate the main portal by selecting the category first, and then transfer to the "hotlist portal" as per the solution provided by Queue (above) Thanks Dave
  13. Thanks... that's exactly what I wanted. I'll try to track down the "static portal". Dave
  14. Thanks for a speedy response... That's the idea, and I had reached much the same stage. My sticking point is that sending a code to the hotlist doesn't remove it from the main list. Also, when I select a code from halfway down the main list it jumps back to the first entry on the main list. Regards Dave
  15. I have a really long list of fee codes (+/- 3500), so a "hotlist" is an obvious necessity. I could just allow users to flag the hotlist items in the "Fees" file and display the flagged fees in the "Invoice" file using a conditional menu, but I'd like to give the users a 'professional' interface to create the hotlist, where they can move codes to and from the hotlist....something along the lines of the FM Sort dialogue box. I've tried a variety of relationships (and even tried writing hotlist entries to another file...) nothing has worked... can a brighter mind suggest a solution? Thanks Dave
  16. Thanks Vaughan A full list is not an option... there are too many fee codes. Initially I was reluctant to make the trade a user input(selection), but now I realise that it's the only way to go. So I followed your second suggestion and it does the trick! Thanks for your input. Regards Dave
  17. I need to select fee codes from a list. Some fee codes are available to all technicians, some are available only to one trade and some are available to more than one trade, but not all trades. To make it more complicated, some technicians are qualified to bill in more than one trade. I tried using repeating fields and conditional value lists, but didn
  18. Does anyone know where I can get a copy of VNC server for Macintosh
  19. That's it Ugo... I realised that I had to make the c_matchToFrom field text the same colour as the background and then it displays perfectly! Thanks a mill...!! dave
  20. Ugo Sorry to bug you...I thought I had it licked, but then I realised that it was possible for the user to change the referral to/from field from "To" or "From" to "No referral" without the salesman number updating automatically to "0000". I've tried a variety of validation calculations but I can't get it right. Any thoughts? dave
  21. Thanks Ugo That put me on the right track... I've got it working perfectly! And thanks for your input Lionel. Regards dave
  22. Thanks Lionel... That's pretty much where I had got to... what I'm trying to do is get the same list of salesmen to appear when the referral is flagged as "to" or "by". So far the only way I've been able to do it is to have two records for each salesman - one as a "to" record and one as a "from" record... is there any way that I could do it with one salesman record? dave
  23. Thanks for looking at this... I should have explained that I need to flag whether it is a "To" or "From" referral... so I have 2 fields... the first indicates whether it is "referred to" , "referred from" or "no referral", the second is the salesman employee number. If there is no referral the salesman number must be "00000", if there is a referral in either direction the first field should show "To" or From" and in the second field salesman number must be selected from the list. The default should be "No Referral" and salesman = "00000". If "To" or "From" is selected in the first field "00000" is an invalid salesman code. dave
  24. I'm developing a contact database, and I need to track referrals. The default for a contact is no referral, alternatively "referred to" or "referred from". In each of the alternate cases the list of salesmen (...they are all men ) that a contact is referred from or to is the same, so I'd like to use one list for both cases. I've looked at the "Country" example on conditional value lists, but I can't figure out how to modify it to solve my problem. Please help.... Thanks Dave
  25. Thanks...that does the trick. And I'm embarrassed that I asked the question... I should have remembered that! Dave
